This study was conducted to evaluate the microstructure and the compressive strength of two formulations of zirconia-based ceramics: one highly crystallized, the other amorphous. The two materials were three-layered, and the zirconia was partially replaced with alumina. Seven test specimens were fabricated for each material, and the compressive strength was evaluated after 24 hours of storage in water. The specimens were evaluated using x-ray diffraction, electron backscatter diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The highly crystallized and the amorphous zirconia-based ceramics were characterized by distinct, fine crystalline and amorphous phases respectively, but both materials contained a minor proportion of non-crystalline alumina. The crystallinity of the materials was slightly higher when the zirconia was replaced with alumina (p=0.056). No statistically significant differences in the compressive strength of the two materials were detected at the time of the study (p=0.362). The absence of a statistically significant difference in the compressive strength of the two materials suggests that the microstructure of the two materials is similar.
